In the world of search engine optimization you have two groups that are polar opposites of one another.  You have the whitehat seo folks and the blackhat seo folks.  While the whitehat groups works on getting high search engine rankings within the rules set forth by the search engines, the blackhat seo group is constantly searching for loopholes. While it can be easy to get traffic quickly with blackhat seo (and hence why it appeals to so many people) its always a short term traffic strategy.  Anybody on the blackhat side of things is constantly trying to stay below the radar so that their tactics are not discovered by the search engines.  So if you want some advice on search engine optimization, avoid the lure of the blackhat side of seo and stick with whitehat – the long term benefits far outweigh the immediate short term gains you get from blackhat.
