I thought it was obvious that we needed to improve the quantity and the quality of communication within our company.   We were not having a fast enough delivery of sales information and when we received it we were not reacting to it in a timely manner because of all the record keeping and data entry.  It was the same way on the production line.  When I introduced the concept of a plant floor manufacturing execution system I also provided the data that demonstrated what we could expect for a return on investment.  I showed that we would have reclaimed the expense within six months and be making a profit after that.
