What Hunting Dog Do

Dogs have been bred and trained for centuries to assist hunters. One group of these breeds is hunting dogs. Normally smaller than hounds, they specialize in hunting smaller game. Labrador and golden retrievers belong to the retriever category and are bred to retrieve game the hunter has killed without damaging it. On the other hand, pointers and setters have similar behaviors. When a pointer detects its game, it silently points its muzzle in its direction, providing the hunter a major advantage of knowing the game’s location, ensuring a good shot. Setters react similarly. Using sent to detect the location of their game, they freeze and do not chase the game. This gives the hunter the opportunity to approach the game and take a shot.
